San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools Supporting PBIS
The Prevention and Intervention Team at San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools provides PBIS Tiered-Trainings for districts in our county. In addition, PBIS workshops for classroom-based practices are also available for schools and districts implementing PBIS. Tiered-trainings are provided every year in Tier 1, 2, and 3. Trainings focus on the why, what, and how of each tier and also how to build systems to support implementation of the tiers. Tiered-trainings consist of four team days and two coaches days. Schools use the Tiered-Fidelity Inventory (TFI) to measure their level of fidelity and each year schools are recognized for their implementation at the state level through the California PBIS Coalition. Every November, the SBCSS Prevention and Intervention Team hosts the SBCSS PBIS Showcase where schools and districts that received PBIS recognition at the state level are recognized. Schools can receive bronze, silver, gold, and platinum recognition. At the 2019 SBCSS PBIS Showcase over 400 schools in the county received some form of recognition, including 13 schools who received platinum status.
PBIS Tiers of Support
PBIS Tier 1 focuses on universal supports for all students. During Tier 1, practices and supports are put in place schoolwide to establish a foundation of positive support while also preventing unwanted behaviors.
PBIS Tier 2 focuses on providing additional supports to students who are at risk for developing and displaying more serious problem behaviors. Supports are put in place to help students develop the skills they need to be successful in all school programs.
PBIS Tier 3 focuses on providing more intensive and individualized supports for students to help them improve their behavioral and academic outcomes. Formal assessments are often used to help determine individual student need.
PBIS and COVID-19 School Closures
In March of 2020, in response to the COVID-19 school closures, the SBCSS Prevention and Intervention Team did a virtual pivot and moved their PBIS Tiered- Training series to a virtual platform. Content was revised in order to meet the needs of schools and districts looking to continue their PBIS implementation in a virtual and hybrid setting. For the 2020-2021 school year, the SBCSS Prevention and Intervention Team is continuing to provide all PBIS trainings and workshops virtually to support schools and districts in their current PBIS implementations during these unprecedented times. In addition, during the COVID-19 school closures, the Prevention and Intervention Team worked in collaboration with state and regional PBIS organizations to provide resources and align efforts to support schools and districts in safe return to school planning and to target student outcomes for distance learning. State PBIS recognition criteria was adjusted for the 2019-2020 school year to account for school closures and schools were awarded the Community Cares Award for their efforts in providing support to their students and families during school closures in the spring. The SBCSS Prevention and Intervention Team will be recognizing those schools and districts who received the Community Cares Award at the SBCSS PBIS Showcase which will be held virtually on November 12, 2020.
